Designer Duds

Clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience” (Colossians 3:12).

I couldn’t help but notice the word “humility” in this verse. Humility in the way we clothe ourselves? Sure, humility is a mindset, but it did get me thinking about material clothing. As I pondered, I wondered how humility could be modeled in our clothing since, after all, isn’t fashion by its very nature a way to draw attention to oneself and express her individuality

Humility is the opposite of pride. And one practicality of this verse is a woman’s primary focus should not be on the brands she wears or the cost of her clothes. It’s not wrong to wear designer labels or expensive garments; it’s wrong to pridefully base ones identity in them.
I have to admit, I used to be a slave to the label. I would often buy high fashion threads on sale, even if I didn’t much like them, simply to have them hang in my closet. What weirdness.
Fortunately, I broke that habit, and now shop according to my personal style, not name recognition. A humble reminder that my identity is in TheDesigner, not the duds.
